Introduction

A cochlear implant is a kind of ear-implanted device, designed to help hearing-impaired people. But this implant can go flat. There comes our mobile application as a temporary substitute for such cases.

Challenges

This was a development of an application that records a sound using a microphone. The application adjusts the sound and plays it back to the headphones. The biggest challenge was to implement all the sophisticated sound smoothing filters and to optimize them for real-time human speech.

Solution

First we implemented the application for the Android platform but there we encountered limits in accessing the phone's hardware. For this reason, we implemented the application in iOS only where it was possible to use the filters in a more native form making the application noticeably faster.

Results

A mobile application allowing to process the sound from the microphone to the headphones under 40 ms was created. This is the time for which the human eye does not recognize any delay compared to a speaking person. This application won the Vodafone Foundation Prize.
